Monastir Monastir is the capital of Monastir Governorate and lies on the north-eastern coast of Tunisia in North Africa. The 9th century town walls and the Ribat tower contrast beautifully with the modern resort that has emerged from the desert. Monastir gets its name from the 8th century Islamic monastery which is now a museum of Islamic art and artefacts.
